Verizon trying to playing catch-up with their very own app store

by Shawn Brown on July 14th, 2009

java-storeVerizon Wireless, in a last minute desperate call for help, is calling out to developers to help them get ready with the release of the new upcoming Verizon application store. This does not seem like a great idea for developers because they would rather work on platforms that are already up and running than drop everything and start helping a single carrier with the ground work.

With everyone popping out their app store, Verizon figured hey why not, better late than never right? Well at this point it may be a too little too late. Its clear that OS specific app stores regardless of carrier is where the application development needs to be. Verizon tends to force their customers into locked down operating systems and now an app store?

At this point neither developers nor mobile phone companies are going to want to take the step backward, let alone the risk to work with a company that just can’t seem to leave things alone. Whether they are particularly good at something or not Verizon always scrambles to have their hand in everything making nothing they do ahead of the rest. What do you guys think about the release of the Verizon application store?

Does this mean I will be able to apps like Twitter? I am tired of everything I use being offered for IPhone, Blackberry and Windows Mobile only.

yea, i would hope they would make apps for twitter & facebook, things of that nature, cause we seem to be 1 of the only carriers without it…. hmmm. sounds good to me!
