BlackBerry Tour, BlackBerry Apex Announcement May 5th?

blackberry-niagaraVerizon Wireless Crackberries may get a delightful surprise on May 5th at the Wireless Enterprise Symposium in Orlando, Florida. According to Scott Moritz from The Street, this is the place and time that Research In Motion will unveil the BlackBerry Tour which you might be more familiar with as the codenamed BlackBerry Niagara.

The BlackBerry Tour is essentially the BlackBerry Bold for Verizon Wireless but it brings “World Phone” capabilities meaning it will work on European networks in addition to VZW’s 3G CDMA network. It will supposedly cost $199 after all is said and done (contract, rebate).

In addition to the BlackBerry Tour the company might also reveal the BlackBerry Apex which is essentially a rebranded Verizion version of yet another device, the BlackBerry Pearl Flip on T-Mobile. You probably know them for the “butt-dialing” commercials:

It won’t appeal to the most avid smartphone fans but a flip BlackBerry could be enticing to plenty of people and Verizon is making a good move by acquiring it. Not only that but they need some shining stars to launch this summer as Sprint will be getting the Pre, AT&T will be getting new iPhones and T-Mobile will likely be launching the MyTouch 3G. We know Verizon has an Android Phone or two in the works and the Voyager 2 itself is probably on the way but the company doesn’t want to endure a long summer with nothing new. The BlackBerry Tour and BlackBerry Apex should bring them some nice attention.
